The best I could tell the tariff is going to be 2.5% of the purchase price. I guess I'll find out in a few months, when I pick it up. I contacted my local port in Baltimore, MD (room 119) 40 south gay street Baltimore, MD 21202 410-962-2666) and they said I will need the following documentation.

  • Bill of sale + invoice
  • Arrival notice from the shipper
  • A photo ID
  • money to pay for the tariff
  • 9 dollars for a handling fee

There is tons of info on the web about importing things, I am sure once I have gone through it I will be able to explain the process more clearly.

After some more looking, it seems this is pretty complicated and I am going to higher the services of a customs brokers. You can find a list of local brokers at the customs web site click here.

I have hired the services of

EXCEL GLOBAL LOGISTICS, INC
502 MCCORMICK DRIVE, SUITE C
GLEN BRUNIE, MD 21061 (410) 863-0960

For them to complete the import process they need the following from me.

  • Customs power of attorney. They will fax a form over to you to fill out. It must be notarized.
  • Commercial invoice. The excel spread sheet from the factory will do.
  • Ocean bill of lading (original copy) This document will come from the shipper after the cargo has left the UK.

Okay the import process is done and I couldn't be happier about using a broker. Looking at the customs invoice every part was separately classified and charged a different tax rate. Tax rate range from .21% up to 2.5%. The only exception is anything that contains bearings, in which case you will get to enjoy a 50% tax. When your customs broker ask you if the uprights contain bearings, you may want to say no to avoid the 50% tax on those pieces. You will also find the free shipping from the factory is no where near free. After the customs charges, import taxes, paper work charges, loading dock fees, etc. Check out the cost page for a complete run down. Click here to go to the cost page. I also ended up having the crate delivered to my house because it was 2 inches wider than my car trailer.
